    Description

WW2 "Snow Camouflage" COVER for Mountain Rucksack
    (
    "
    MEESE
    INC. 1942"
    )
    NOS Unissued!!!
ZERO snags, holes, stains, tears, seam separations or damage beyond some very, very mild yellowing. This is a 79-year-old piece of cotton. Do NOT store it in contact with paper, rubber bands -- or any material which contains sulfur!
These "Camouflage Covers" are  EXTREMELY Rare, more so than any of the Rucksacks themselves! They turn up only RARELY!
As  every climber know, on every continent, in every season, at HIGH enough elevations, even in the lower latitudes of both hemispheres, snowfields ARE encountered...and the Mountain Troops were trained and equipped to wage war in that hostile, blinding environment where a dark object can be seen at great distance
    s
This one came out of the Zippered Flap Pocket of the
    Specification J.Q.D. 88B
Mountain Rucksack  and is stamped at the center-top margin,
    "MEESE INC. 1942".
Each RUCKSACK came from the manufacturer with one of these
    Cotton "Snow Camouflage" COVERS
and was stamped similarly to the RUCKSACK itself. The three different iterations of the Rucksacks made before and during the war all used this pattern Cover.
(This is NOT to be confused with the CURRENT Rucksack Cover which is issued today which is made of much
    HEAVIER Cotton fabric
    and has
    ELASTIC webbing
at the perimeter instead of Cotton Ropes!)
    As equipment was
    re
turned to the Quartermaster, or as the troops laundered these Covers (for the 'snow camo' equipment, e.g.
    Over-mittens
, Anoraks, Trousers, etc. to function they were to be kept immaculately CLEAN) ...
    they
    were invariably
    commingled
with one another in the field and
    at the Depots
    .
The Cover is a Large piece of sectioned Cotton Sheeting joined by
    Lap-fell Seams
and tightens/cinches over the Rucksack by means of several
    1/4" three-strand COTTON ROPES
that are threaded through a Tube-seam around the circumference. The ROPES exit through
    3 Black Painted
    Metal GROMMETS
, the finish of which is PERFECT.
    (
    NOTE
: the Ames Ice Axe, Manila Climbing Rope, and the Rucksack are
    NOT
    a part of this sale.)
