    M1942 Steel Canteen Cup--1942
    Original M1942 canteen cup, zinc plated steel construction with sharp turned-under lip and tin plated steel handle. Faintly marked U.S./A.G.M. CO./1942 on underside of body. Original owner's initials W.W.B. written in pencil on front of cup [these are covered when handle is folded]. Several areas of discoloration to body and handle, but no dents, rust or other damage.
    This type of cup was adopted as an emergency measure in 1942 to conserve aluminum for more critical wartime uses [read: aircraft production], but was short-lived because the plating would wear off with use and the steel body would rust--one of several ill-fated attempts to make canteens and mess gear out of substitute materials early in the war. Nicer than most cups of this type and is in fine condition. Any questions please feel free to ask.
