VINTAGE Canvas Military U.S. Army Messenger Bag Backpack Tote Lot of 2

I believe these bags were my grandfathers, as I found them while cleaning out my grandparents home. He has some items around still from when he served in WWII. Since my grandparents are both past, I cannot confirm this. There is a symbol on one of the bags that I am unable to decipher so if anyone knows, please let me know. I am very interested. Because of the age, they are in rough shape and do show signs of wear and there is rust on the metal rings. The handles are intact and in good shape on the bag and backpack and the string is attached on the one to close it, as well as the snap pegs and holes for the other bag. I don't see any holes in either of the bags but if there are, they are very small and unnoticeable. I do not know what the purpose of the bags or any other information.
The messenger style bag is 12 inches high, 15 inches wide at top and 11 inches wide at bottom. The handle is 34 inches long.
The backpack style bag is 14 inches high, about 15 inches wide at the top and about 13 inches wide at the bottom. The adjustable back straps are about 20 inches long.
