The GPS satellite has been named Canopus, after the second brightest star in the sky. Canopus is the brightest star in the Argo Navis constel-lation (now divided into three constellations: Carina, Puppis, and Vela).  Canopus, which is depicted in the evening sky along with a GPS Block IIF satellite and the Delta IV symbol for the launch vehicle.  The sky is orange to represent the time of day that Canopus will be launched (also the color of the Denver Broncos and the Florida Gators for you sports fans).  The mountain signifies Pikes peak in Colorado for our on-orbit ops teams.  The palm trees and LAX restaurant are displayed in honor of the development team in Los Angeles.  The Cape Canaveral team, which includes Boeing and 45

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based navigation system made up of a network of 24 satellites placed into orbit by the U.S. Department of Defense. GPS was originally intended for military applications, but in the 1980s, the government made the system available for civilian use. GPS works in any weather conditions, anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day.
